Kevin Wassegijig is the inaugural Executive Director for Luminary. Kevin is a proud member of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island in northeastern Ontario. During the summer of 2024, Kevin was elected by his community to serve as a Councilor. His experience and in organizational strategic planning, community economic development, business development will serve as his foundation in leading Luminary.
With a career that has included roles in various organizations that have focused on the health and sustainability of the indigenous community. This has included roles in the Ontario provincial government in the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation and the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. His career has included executive leadership roles in the not-profit sector. He has extensive experience in the corporate sector in the gaming industry as part of the opening team with Casino Rama.
He has volunteered with governance in education as a member of the Board of Governors and program community advisory committees and Chair of Anishinabe Education and Training Circle for Georgian College. Kevin also served on the President’s Advisory on Economic Development for Lakehead University.
Kevin believes in lifelong learning and has MBA in Indigenous Business Leadership from Simon Fraser University. He is also a graduate of Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario in Recreation Leadership.
The revitalization and preservation of Anishinaabemowin has been a constant effort and Kevin continues to learn the language of his community.
In his free time, Kevin enjoys sports as a long time hockey player, coach and fan. He values his time attending powwow and cultural activities. Kevin’s main focus remains his daughters and grandchildren.
