Session Overview
June is National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month, an opportunity to recognize the diversity and intersectionality of Indigenous identities. First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples are distinct, and Indigenous people may also be 2SLGBTQIA+, gender-diverse, Black, racialized, disabled or connected to more than one cultural or family identity.

This session will explore how identity, lived experience and belonging are shaped by overlapping relationships, histories and systems, and how much energy employees can spend adjusting themselves to fit workplaces that leave little room for who they are. Panelists will discuss how assumptions can erase or simplify identities, how self-identification is handled in hiring and workforce data, and how organizations can respond thoughtfully when questions about Indigenous identity arise, without expecting any employee to explain, prove or represent an identity or community.

What You'll Take Away

  • A stronger understanding of the distinctions and diversity among First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples
  • Questions for noticing where employees may feel they need to set parts of themselves aside at work
  • Considerations for handling self-identification, privacy and identity-related questions with care

Who Should Attend
This session is designed for human resources professionals, managers, organizational leaders, Indigenous inclusion practitioners and others involved in employee experience, workforce data, policy or workplace culture. No previous knowledge of the topic is required.

Where This Work Continues
Respect for identity shows up in everyday decisions: how forms are designed, how self-identification is handled, how managers respond when someone shares who they are. Indigenous Works training and policy advisory support help organizations review these practices with employee privacy and choice at the centre.
