Session Overview
When Indigenous candidates are not applying, attention often turns to the size of the talent pool or the reach of outreach. The hiring process itself may also contain barriers, or send messages employers do not immediately recognize.

This session will walk through each stage of hiring, from job descriptions and qualification requirements to application systems, interviews and the first weeks on the job. Participants will look at how narrow definitions of "qualified" can screen out experience gained through community roles, land-based work, caregiving and other paths, and how an organization's reputation and relationships shape whether its commitment to Indigenous inclusion is seen as credible.

What You'll Take Away

  • Common barriers that may affect Indigenous candidates throughout the hiring process
  • Questions for reviewing job postings, qualification requirements and how lived and community experience is recognized
  • Considerations for onboarding that sets new Indigenous employees up to stay

Who Should Attend
This session is designed for recruitment and human resources professionals, hiring managers, interview-panel members, Indigenous employment practitioners and others responsible for hiring policies, processes or technology. No previous knowledge of the topic is required.

Where This Work Continues
Barriers in hiring are rarely found in just one place. Indigenous Works offers hiring process reviews and recruitment/retention training that look at the full candidate experience, from job postings to onboarding. For organizations ready to hold their practices to a standard, Employer of Choice Certification assesses whether commitments are reflected across the workforce lifecycle.
